The government is working to install anti-drone technology in all prisons in the country, the Prisons Department said, a day after police intercepted a drone believed to have flown drugs into prisons from Tapah yesterday.
Commissioner of Prisons General Nordin Muhamad said the department is always aware of the threat posed by drones that smuggle contraband into prisons. He added that Tapah prison itself already has anti-drone systems and anti-virus equipment to stop this threat.
The department is working with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to address this challenge. Anti-drone systems and anti-drone equipment have been developed using local technology and expanded to all prisons, he said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Perak police chief Azizi Mat Aris said a Tapah prison sergeant spotted a drone on the roof while patrolling the prison at 11:30am yesterday. A bag containing 122g of heroin and 12.9g of methamphetamine was found attached to the drone. Azizi said that this is the first time that people have been reported using airplanes to smuggle drugs into prisons.
